Recordings and Performances

Recorded at my final concert with the NDSU Jazz Ensemble in April 2017, this is one of the best original bass bone features I've stumbled across. This samba was written by Chris Walden for Bill Reichenbach and can be found on the album Full-On! by the Chris Walden Big Band.

Here's a great bass trombone feature piece I played with the NDSU Jazz Ensemble in April of 2015. The arrangement is by the incomparable Patrick Williams and you can find a recording of Phil Teele playing it with the Patrick Williams Big Band on the album Sinatraland. Hope you like it!

This is my performance of Brubeck's first Concerto for Bass Trombone, from my Junior Recital on April 12th, 2015, recorded in Beckwith Recital Hall at the NDSU Challey School of Music.  Here is some notes on the piece.

Christopher Brubeck (1952) is an award winning American composer and performer.  He is a son of famed jazz musician and composer Dave Brubeck.  He is a very versatile composer and examples of this can be found in his first Concerto for Bass Trombone (1991).  The first movement is an energetic opening that is full of jazz influence including a “honky – tonk” section.  The second movement is a jazz ballad that is meant to evoke a smoky piano bar.  The final movement is a combination of numerous influences including Funk (the title refers to the turnaround motive from James Brown’s hit song “I Feel Good”), Middle Eastern, and of course more jazz.

I hope you enjoy my performance of this great piece of music.
