Taylor Peterson is a freelance trombonist and educator from St. Paul, MN.  Peterson studies Trombone Performance at the North Dakota State University Challey School of Music with Dr. Kyle Mack.  He is a member of the FM Kicks Jazz Band, a professional big band based in the Fargo-Moorhead area, where he has performed in numerous side-by-side educational concerts with high school ensembles and the Fargo-Moorhead Learning Bank 5th Grade Jazz Educational Concerts.  In addition, Peterson is currently a Substitute Bass Trombonist for the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra and Trombonist for Festival Masses at the Church of St. Peter in North Saint Paul, MN.  In chamber music, he is

frequently requested to perform with

ensembles for weddings and other

events, performing on trombone,

euphonium, and tuba.  His passion for

chamber music has evolved into

coaching a student brass quintet at

NDSU.  Most recently, Peterson spent

a week at the Juilliard School as a

student worker for the 2016

International Trombone Festival.

 

Being at NDSU has allowed him to

participate in pit orchestra

performances for both musicals

and operas; including Mozart’s

The Magic Flute, Stephen Sondheim’s

Sweeney Todd and solo trombone for Benjamin Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.  During his time at NDSU, Peterson has performed multiple solos with the NDSU Jazz Ensemble and was a featured soloist with the NDSU Gold Star Marching Band in their 2015 Bruno Mars Show.  Additionally, Peterson is the Breathing Gym Instructor and Brass Tech for the Gold Star Marching Band.

He began trombone with Scott Snyder and has studied primarily with Kyle Mack and Sam Pilafian, additional studies with Nat Dickey and Ed Huttlin.  Through NDSU, Peterson has had the opportunity to participate in masterclasses with the world renowned Boston Brass and the U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors.  In the summer of 2015, he participated in the first annual Boston Brass Summer Intensive, held at the University of Wyoming.  During the week he was coached in chamber performances, solo playing, musicianship, entrepreneurship, and had one-on-one lessons with Sam Pilafian and Domingo Pagliuca.  Outside of music, Peterson enjoys road-tripping, biking, and reading about history.
